This just started happening to me on 2 Macs today! I thought maybe it was the disc and then tried my laptop. Both running 1.17.7 - both gave the 'fatal error occoured' message and auto quit. I think it must be a date related thing? Normally makemvk expires at some point?

This could be a downlaod issue. I just tried to install MakeMKV on top of a clean install of Mac OS Mavericks (something I've had no issue with before).
