Same issue. DVD plays, MakeMKV can rip the title from the DVD to .mkv, but when trying to backup the DVD to an ISO, consistent error no matter the protection method.

Not sure why it would not work for Handbrake for you - I'm on Sonoma 14.5 and using the latest versions of VLC and Handbrake.
Recap: enable Terminal in App Management, and then run the the MakeMKV app (MakeMKV in Applications) and the executable (makemkv in the MacOS folder) as root, then go to ...

Running as root didn’t work for me to get handbrake working on Ventura 13.6.1 on an M2 Pro Mac Mini.
