Re: Backup disc digital storage
There is no way that works for everyone, my answer is: it depends. For example, for the DVDs that I care about the most, or that are rare or at risk of being out of catalog, or TV series, I make the ISO of the entire DVD. For the others, however, copying with MakeMKV is enough. For Blurays, however,...

Re: External drive for DVD and BD only
Hi.
I recommend you get a Pioneer. Last year I got this on Amazon: https://www.vinpowerdigital.com/product ... r-bdr-212v.
I use it with a usb-sata adapter.
It is also flashable if you are interested in UHD in the future, but only if the burner was produced before 2023 if I remember correctly.

Re: MakeMKV above v1.17.7 still broken on Linux
Yes. You could also do it this way (not tested, just an idea): install on VM Ubuntu from v20.04+, download MakeMKV v1.17.7 from here https://makemkv.com/download/old/ and install in it, then start it and make it download the private_data.tar file. Once done, copy this file to the .makemkv directory ...

Re: MakeMKV above v1.17.7 still broken on Linux
It's not like that.
On EndeavourOS (Arch derivative) MakeMKV v1.18.1 installed from AUR works perfectly. The important thing is to have the private_data.tar file (that I have from previous versions).

Re: Ripping subtitles to srt file
You need an extractor, on Linux I use Mkv-extractor-qt5, or gMKVExtractGui, mkvextract gui from the MKVToolNix suite. With this you extract the subs, then you have to save them in subrip. I use SubTitle Edit for this, but you also need OCR software, again on Linux I use tesseract.

Re: New Feature Request
On Linux I created a shortcut that uses the eject command to open/close the burner door. I wish I know how to use that code, but I don't. They are commands that you write in a terminal, or have them executed in a script. But you have to use Linux: https://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man1/eject.1.html

Re: MakeMKV just won't work.
You could try to do it this way (untested, is just an idea), but only if you have purchased a license. Make a virtual machine with Virtualbox, install Ubuntu 24.04, then install an old version of MakeMKV from sources, download it here: https://makemkv.com/download/old/ Start MakeMKV of the VM and en...

Re: MakeMKV just won't work.
Hi.
I had the same problem on EndeavourOS, and I solved it thanks to the previous version I have on Ubuntu in dual boot. I don't know if it can be the same for you too. Read here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=35703

Re: Report of BluRay-Disc Recovery
Hi. I understand you perfectly. This summer I bought my first bluray burner to back up all my bluray movies and TV series. This is because in my collection (1200 titles, 1000 DVDs 200 BDs) about 20% of Blurays are ruined and no longer readable, neither by the LG living room player nor by MakeMKV. I'...

@dcoke22
Thanks, I didn't know that. I think even though it hasn't been tested, it should work for others who have this problem.

Re: MakeMKV does not proceed beyond downloading SDF
I also had this problem recently when I installed EndeavourOS in dual boot with Ubuntu 20.04.6. On Ubuntu I have v1.17.7 which works perfectly. On EndeavourOS I installed v1.17.8 from AUR. I solved it by reading this thread, in fact it was enough to copy the private_data.tar file that I had in the o...

Re: Unsure which method to store/play ripped DVD's and Blu-rays
I'm not sure because I've never used it, but it seems to me that MakeMKV can rip DVDs by creating the ISO. But wait for more authoritative answers than me. On Linux (Ubuntu distro) as mentioned I used special programs, I think they also exist on MacOS. First of all I installed libdvdcss, then dvdbac...

Re: Unsure which method to store/play ripped DVD's and Blu-rays
Hi. I don't know which one is best for you, but I can tell you how I did it. I have a DVD/BD collection of more than 1000 titles, but Blurays only account for 10-20%. I backed up the DVDs that I care about most, while for the Blurays I backed up all the ones I have, this is because I realized that t...

[FEATURE REQUEST] Being able to save chapters of a movie
I don't know if it's already been asked, but I would like MakeMKV to give the possibility to copy the chapters of a movie that one wants, above all to exclude at least the final ones. Let me explain: yesterday I was copying The Island, a 2005 movie. Well, when I got a few seconds from the end MakeMK...
