Doing even more digging, I came to realize that my current drive, ASUS BC-12D2HT, is in fact capable of reading BD-XL discs. Do any of the discs contain Stereo audio tracks, or is it all varying kinds of Surround Sound? If the latter, then in VLC, right-click on the window, and navigate to Audio -> Stereo Mode.
