The difference is probably down to the audio languages. In makemkv, click the arrow next to each and look at the audio/subtitles languages.

Definitely remains a useful and desired feature. I'm ripping Star Trek TNG, which consists of about 40 blu rays. I have the UHD collection which includes the bluray and I was just pulling the extras off the discs yesterday. They are indeed java based. I ripped the disc with all English and Japanese subtitles just to be sure.

Rip it as 1 file then you can use MKVToolNix to split it at the chapter. I use MKVToolnix GUI to run them. Very useful set of tools.

The implication being I should add my dump into his post? My assumption was to post it separately as to not get lost in the fray, but if that is the SOP, I'll abide.

I am using the KEYDB.cfg and am unable to rip Twister or Phantoms, and now Civil War but my key differs from the OP.

EDIT - I spoke to soon, just updated keys again and Twister finally opened up.
