Turns out same disc plays on VLC, except for the menus. Just rolls right through the main video. Yes, linux is wonky with this. Won't play without telling it where java is. Then it plays even though the menus fail. So the drive is fine, maybe some similar compatibility issue with makemkv as with vlc...

really? The same basic error happens with every disc I try. Only the very first was ever readable.
