I have now repeated it with the very latest ffmpeg version and it no longer works with TrueHD audio.

Well looking at the network packets, it looks like it is looking for host1.pwhost.ru and Downloads.napp-2.com, though even though it can contact these it still doesnt work without a VPN, so I guess there is something else that is being blocked that I am not seeing.

Make sure your discs are clean and if it still fails it could be a comms issue. To check a comms issue, run up a VPN on the machine and try again while the VPN is running. If it works there is an issue with IP or DNS filtering I imagine.
