I ended up using a eSATA to USB adaptor off flea bay, which worked fine and may be a useful / cheap workaround to other hitting the same issue with this enclosure.

I am hitting almost exactly the same issue with an LG CH10LS20 (LS20) the drive is in an external USB enclosure.
