yea that's a great idea. i had gone halfway there and currently have it plugged in through vantec's sata adapter (rather than the enclosure itself), thouhg i suppose that might as well be the same thing as just plugging in to enclosure because it's still sata -- > usb. i have not yet actually opened...

And for what it's worth, after getting two consecutive defective lgs (an ns40 and 60), i jumped ship to a pioneer drive. i'm not burning -- only ripping -- but even though it's a bit slower than it seems like it could be, it's been rock solid reliable. super happy with it.
