DAR is in the MKV header and is easily edited using mkvtoolnix. However, changing the aspect ratio will result in XBMC rendering the 16:9 video stream in this custom non-square pixel ratio too. Black bars will become even larger if rendered on 16:9 display.

DASPI kext is installed in /System/Library/Extensions/daspi.kext
Thrash it. Reboot. Reinstall.

Why? There's more important things to do besides adding (at most) 48 pixels height by hiding the menu bar and application window. What is to gain besides 1 or 2 extra lines of text?

Most likely, your MKV contains the original surround sound audio. Multichannel sound files with lots of headroom. Windows Media Player will perform a stereo mixdown but attenuates the volume level to not risk distortion or clipping when 6+ channels of audio will saved to 2 channels. Your DVD ripped ...

I have ripped 6 Blurays so far using my LG BH10LS30 on OS X Snow Leopard.
No problems. MakeMKV is the only software able to rip all bluray discs on my Mac, other ripping softwares will fail on some discs.
