If there's a difference, it's the player's fault. Maybe PowerDVD is changing some settings behind your back when you play the mkv.

Both movies have Dolby TrueHD soundtracks....... Did you also keep the "core"? Does your media player support TrueHD? When you say "Media Player", do you mean Media Player Classic, Windows Media Player, or a standalone hardware media player?

A competitor's program (which is used only for ripping, and lacks mkv muxing), is able to tell which is the correct playlist on this type of disc. Out of respect, I will not name the program.

I would look for a hardware player that will support MPEG2, VC-1, H.264, TrueHD, multi-channel LPCM and/or flac, and DTS-HD MA in an mkv file. That should cover all DVD and Bluray rips. Then, you won't need to transcode anything - saving time, and keeping the full quality.

I think you are getting bad info from XBMC and VLC - they are just showing you the number of channels in the DTS core. I don't believe it's even possible for MakeMKV to convert DTS-HD MA 7.1 to DTS-HD MA 5.1. I'm not sure it will ease your mind any, but you can open the mkv with MakeMKV and it will ...

Are you playing this on a pc via XBMC? If so, I wouldn't re-encode it. Just figure out why it isn't playing correctly in XBMC and fix it.

I would use Makemkv to rip from the disc, and then use Foobar to convert to flac. Foobar will even allow you to split chapters into separate files.

Normally, I wouldn't - but if you want the subs to be identified by a filter that can pick out forced subs (such as the MPC-BE subtitle renderer), then you need to use BDSup2Sub on the Avatar subs.

You can also run the subs through BDSup2Sub and there is an option to set the entire stream as forced.
