Off topic:UHD player w/1080 region free FW Players? Stationary.

So, I have a uhd ripper bought from a member here👍, and use makemkv as well.

I want to expand on a UHD region FW upgradable player for 1080p blurays.

Not optical/portable but stationary under my tv.

I cannot find a suitable forum for what I think I need.

UHD player w/1080 region free FW Players?

From my understanding, a UHD player depending on the brand could be flashed to be region free?

Explanation, I have UHD collection and also 1080p. I have a few 1080p UK version like 2005 the fog.

I am in the USA.

Panasonic/Sony? ?

Am new to the scene of UHD/1080p/dvd player but not FW flashing.

What options are here in the usa?

Modded FW providers?

Suggestions/solutions?

Thanks.

Re: BU40N>MakeMKV>Integration>VLC Blank.

Have you enabled HDR in your settings? In your Display settings should be a toggle to enable HDR for your connected monitor. This toggle should show up if your GPU is HDR capable. It is, it is a RTX 3060TIFE. But I cannot find anything that says HDR. https://i.ibb.co/0wkSwWn/Screenshot-at-2025-08-2...

BU40N>MakeMKV>Integration>VLC Blank.

I am trying to get a 4K movie to display as UHD where when the 4k tv picks up UHD content, I get a popup right top corner saying HDR. When I play Horizon 2024 4k disc in VLC and drag VLC from my 1920x1080p monitor to my 4k tv, HDR label is not displayed on my TV and quality looks bad. Also, Integrat...

Re: tar: This does not look like a tar archive

It isn't a TAR until you remove the gzip encoding that makes it smaller. Kind of like zip, but it isn't. First extract the TAR file from the tar.gz file (gunzip makemkv-bin-1.18.1.tar.gz) then you can use TAR to break the files out. You seem sophisticated. What about this? admin1@ItsAlive:~/Downloa...

Improperly compressed 1.17.7 archives

That thread is probably relevant.
This is with makemkv-oss-1.18.1.tar.gz & makemkv-bin-1.18.1.tar.gz .

Re: MakeMKV & Handbrake

What do you do for a 4K rip? Do you resize it down to 1080? Do you tone map from HDR to SDR? I just makemkv my 4k's to HDD "need to multiplex em to edit the fields on mkvtoolnix to make the mkv proper, like hevc dts language for each selection of vid sound subs etc." "rehaul em"...
