I power-cycled the machine and ... wonder of wonders! It worked! MakeMKV is reading the disc right now. I wonder, though, if there's something the O/S can send to fix the drive (if it's a drive problem and not a driver one) without having to reboot.

Can't seem to read the drive and makemkv isn't giving me the usual hints on what to do. Solution is non-distribution dependent, but I thought I may as well mention that it worked on Fedora 14 x86_64
