Since you've had the drive for a few years, it is possible the drive's optics are a little dirty. You could try gently cleaning them with isopropyl alcohol and lint-free cloths. My UHDs are playing with both VLC and MPC. (although I don't see any integration for MPC in the software).

An alternate solution is to rip instead to play it on-the-fly. In Makemkv you can rip to folder and then play it. You can also then make an ISO with Imgburn and load the ISO with VitualCloneDrive.
