Even a good drive could become defective.
But first I would clean the lenses before throwing in the trash can.

Re: LG BH16NS40
You can also try to clean the laser lenses.
Do it with q-tip and alcohol (Isopropanol). Clean twice and dry immediately also with q-tip or a lint-free cloth.

Re: Operating hours / Burn counts of optical drive
I've no expierience in this case, but supposedly CrystalDiskInfo is able to get different datas from optical drives too. Google says: "Although mainly intended for hard drives, CrystalDiskInfo can also display information about optical drives, such as the number of read operations and other SMA...

Yes lenses are cleaned (with alcohol) several times.
OK, then I'll write it off as a curiosity.
Happy with a working drive.
Thank you.

Re: Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2025
Yes, it's a combo, like the ASUS BC-12D2HT / BC-12B1ST also. But this combo is the first which has problems with the WH16NS60 1.02MK, I had four or fives of CH12NS40 in the past. An with the fw of the BC-12D2HT it has no problems with the same 3-layer discs. Could it be, that the blue laser is dying...

Re: Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2025
I've a curious handling with a CH12NS40. It had the original fw 1.00 installed which was 4k friendly and worked with MakeMKV. But that drive I normaly flash to WH16NS60 1.02MK. But with the WH16NS60 1.02MK no 4K disc will be recognized in Windows (before opening MakeMKV). Trying, trying, trying, sto...

Re: ASUS SBW-06D2X-U
I've a problem with an ASUS SBW-06D2X-U from a friend. First, he's a smoker so the drive smells and looks terrible. The drive is flashed to BDR-UD04 1.14 so far so good. Recognition of CD/DVD with the red laser is great but recognition of BD / 4K ..... also terrible. Some yes, some no, some after mu...

Re: LG BP50NB40 reflashed reads SOME UHD discs
Wash new discs with warm soapy water and dry it carefully with a lint-free cloth.
If this doesn't help, flash it to BU40N 1.03MK and try again.

Is there the "Initio Default Controller" in the device manager? If so uninstall it and check the drive recognition again.

I would do: Selling the old drive as defective and flashing the new drive to WH16NS60 1.02MK.

LOTR is known for a bad pressing. So you've started your 4K ripping unlucky. But with the BW-16D1HT LOTR shouldn't be any problem. I wasn't able to rip these discs with my first 4K friendly drive but that was a LG BH16NS40. After the change to the ASUS the ripping was successfull. Try to wash the d...
