Re: VLC cannot play one specific Blu-ray (AACS v76), but MakeMKV opens it successfully
It looks like VLC was unable to get the Volume Unique Key (VUK) from MakeMKV for some reason, and when you likely added it (or at least the Unit Keys) to KEYDB.cfg when you used FindVUK, it fixed this.
For the record, VLC / libbluray just passes the encrypted data to libaacs / libmmbd for ...

Re: Is a DVD drive worth it in additional to a BD drive?
Probably not the laser itself / whatever produces the laser, but other components (including but not limited to the lens if it's "shared"?).
My Pioneer BDR-S08 can no longer read CD or DVD, but still reads BD and UHD BD fine.

Hmm, that's somewhat weird, as in, encrypted backup produced by MakeMKV should have no bus encryption applied. (At the very least, otherwise MakeMKV should tell you that the M2TS files obtained are corrupted or so as it should verify them against the hashes.)

Re: Feature request: Acknowledgement of keydb.cfg
Yeah it would be nice to show/log what was the reason when no key was found ultimately (i.e., whether it couldn't find / open the file at the path it expects or there's no key for the respective disc in the file).
But to be fair, you can always obtain the disc ID (not VID) of a disc / backup and ...

Re: MakeMKV not ripping some of my Blu-rays and not others?
Huh? This is a log from Handbrake, not MakeMKV, and it was being fed with an MKV file produced by MakeMKV, which means you have already ripped it successfully.
This obviously has nothing to do with "spinning" and/or "not ripping"...

Re: MakeMKV not ripping some of my Blu-rays and not others?
I get error messages in MakeMKV. I am not sure what to do.
I don't want to get "passive aggressive" but I'm not sure what to do either. I mean, is there a particular reason that you still haven't shared those error messages with us yet?
Outside of that I am not sure where to look for the ...

Do they happen to be very recent titles? Are any/most/all of them UHD ones? Is your drive a LibreDrive?

an issue with MakeMKV itself on your system
Could very likely be just that the kernel module sg hasn't been loaded.

Re: Bluray drive Doesn't work with VLC.
VLC, as distributed, can cope with encryption on DVDs but requires extra components to deal with the more complex encryption used on BluRay discs. Specifically you need to add the libaacs component and acquire recent AACS keyfiles - see VideoLAN - AACS for more information and SysAdminSage: How to ...

I could download makemkv.com/sdf.bin through a browser when I was having the same issue in MakeMKV, so either they are somehow downloading from different places, or MakeMKV got stuck because of something else other than geoblocking...

If I were you, I'd probably try to make an encrypted backup with MakeMKV, then try to decrypt it with libaacs instead and see if it makes any difference. To test that, you'd need to make sure VLC leverages libaacs (and maybe libbdplus as well) instead of libmmbd.

Re: Drive Kit 1.0 - pioneer flasher
I hope that this wouldn't sound offensive but I can't help but want to ask: in terms of like "layman interest" (i.e. getting a Pioneer drive crossflashed), is there currently any advantage of using this over BDRFlash? Or, does it aim at gaining one/some (e.g. "breakthrough" regarding post Dec 2022 ...

Better get a slimline to regular SATA adapter, which would then allow you to choose / use a regular SATA to USB adapter. Because "direct to slimline" is considered more niche, choices you have tend to be "cheap" (in quality).USB 3.0 to 7+6 13-pin slimline adapter cable
