Re: Thoughts on Building new PC to rip "BluRays (4K)"

One of the reasons I choose to transcode is it makes the files more easily portable. Putting a few movies on a phone, tablet or laptop is fairly easy when they're about 5GB. It can be a lot harder when they're 30-ish GB.

Re: Redundant files and clips on disks after finishing rip

I should also point out that MakeMKV has a backup option. https://makemkv.com/faq/item/4 This will copy the complete contents of the blu-ray to your hard drive (and remove the encryption if you check the appropriate box). Once you create the backup, you can use MakeMKV to open the backup and select ...

Re: Redundant files and clips on disks after finishing rip

Do you have Expert Mode enabled in MakeMKV? It is a checkbox in the Preferences on the General tab. If you have this turned on, you'll be able to see all the titles MakeMKV finds on the disc. It'll also be helpful to understand a bit about how a blu-ray (and 4K UHD) is laid out. Video is chopped up ...

Re: Crash on loading The Legend of Hell House Bluray / Scream Factory

I wander if Java crashed while trying to interpret the disc? What happens if you don't let MakeMKV use Java on the disc?

Re: Can you add an SRT to an MKV?

Not using MakeMKV. There are other tools though. Check out MKVToolNix: https://mkvtoolnix.download It is a collection of tools for doing all sorts of things with .mkv files. They can either be run on the command line or there's a GUI for them. Your favorite search engine will lead you to examples of...

Re: Thoughts on Building new PC to rip "BluRays (4K)"

Are you using Handbrake to encode? Are you keeping 1080p blu-rays as h.264 files? Lately, I've been encoding 1080p blu-rays into 10-bit h.265 files. The 10-bit color depth helps reduce color banding and the h.265 encoding helps minimize file sizes. Using hardware-based encoders a typical 2-hour blu-...

Re: Harry Potter UHD Boxset - Title Selection

Chamber of Secrets, for example, is a single segment (Segment count: 1), segment 2. That's the same for both titles. The number of chapters are the same, as is the length. I'd guess that the only differences between the two titles are which languages are visible; one is probably English and a bunch ...

Re: Speed

My process is I make a decrypted backup of the whole disc, about 25 minutes +/- (for a regular blu-ray, UHDs take longer). My LG WH16NS60 seems to be, on average, a little faster than my ASUS BW-16D1HT, but the ASUS will often read a disc that my LG stumbles on. Then, I load the backup and create th...

Re: MakeMKVcon does not find license as different user

On unix-like environments, the license data is kept on a per user basis; this may be true on Windows as well. I assume you can't log into your Windows Server as the 'system' user and activate MakeMKV via the GUI. On linux, you can just put your key in the right file in the right place. Presumably so...

Re: Speed

If the optical drive is having trouble correctly reading the disc, the read speeds can be very slow. Often the main culprit is the disc is dirty. Blu-ray players are designed to ignore read errors since most people are unlikely to notice a small error during playback of a movie. MakeMKV, on the othe...

Re: Export fail on Ultraman Blu-Rays

Sometimes discs can have a nearly invisible film on them from contamination at the pressing plant or off-gassing from the plastic case while sitting on the shelf or almost anything you can imagine. This is why it is possible for brand new discs to occasionally be difficult to read. Other things like...
