What happens if you make a decrypted backup of the disc (the icon of the yellow folder and the green arrow on the first screen of MakeMKV) and then open the backup and create .mkv files from the backup?

The drive will read and play older DVDs but not 4K UHD


DVDs and blu-rays (including 4K UHDs) use different wavelength lasers. Most optical drives have two different lasers because of this. It is possible only the 'red' laser for DVDs (and probably CDs) works while the 'blue' laser for blu-rays ...

At the same time, I can still read my encrypted Blu-rays. I expected MakeMKV to stop working completely since, as far as I know, it requests decryption keys from the MakeMKV servers.

You could try the different DVD Opening Modes to see if the outcome is different.

What does your MakeMKV log say?

If MakeMKV is having trouble downloading keys, that's one thing.

If the necessary key for your specific disc isn't available, that's a different thing. If that's the case, attach ...

This process worked for disc two but not disc one. I keep getting the "The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted" message. Even after backing up the disc to the drive.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Are there any entries in the MakeMKV log file?

Can MakeMKV rip other discs with that drive? Have you tried any other discs?

Errors like those generally mean the drive is having trouble reading a spot on the disc. The standard advice is to gently clean the disc and try again. It might also be the case that the disc is damaged. If that's the case, try a different copy of the disc.

I just ran into the same issue when trying to rip Fight Club with the file beginning with ._
Unfortunately Command Shift . did not visualize the file nor did using the successor program to Forklift Command One
Has anyone had any luck exposing this file recently.
