MakeMKV just shows whatever name the disc's authors gave it. Usually it is the name of the movie, but not always.

If you're having trouble ripping a disc, try gently cleaning it.

I don't think I've seen an error like that before. Are you trying to create .mkv files directly from the optical disc or from a backup?

When MakeMKV scans the disc in question, does it say anything in the log about excluding a title for some reason? You might have to have debug logging turned on to see this. (I always have debug logging turned on, so I'm less familiar with what's in the log with it turned off.)

If the optical drive works in an external case with your laptop, that suggests either a piece of wonky hardware or a bad driver on your PC. Since you did a clean install of Windows on the PC, I assume all the drivers for the hardware were up-to-date which more strongly suggests wonky hardware on you...
