Just to follow up here, my above symptoms seem to have been a precursor to the end of the drive. It stopped being able to read Blu Rays at all a couple days ago. Time to replace I guess.

I found the same thing and from what I can tell the only difference is they removed Sylvester Stallone from the opening and ending credits in the EXT version.
