I've just had this happen except the drive now refuses to read anything but standard DVD, won't even read standard BR any more

It depends on the media player that you are using also. If you have an Oppo for example, you will need to select the correct subtitle and it will display correctly while the movie is playing. The funny thing is Oppo claim that they have no issues with compression. I'm guessing there maybe a combination of things which is irritating as no-one company/person involved in the chain will admit it's their problem :/
