Re: Issue with Forced VOBSUB in Phantom Menace
This is a known issue with that DVD, you need to fix the transparency or else the subtitles are invisible. I extracted them, ran them through bdsup2sub with the --fix-invisible option, and remuxed them into the mkv file. Some DVD rippers like AnyDVD (if you can still run it) or XReveal have a settin...

Re: Hot Air May Save Your Disk
I'm sure it has more to do with the cleanings and multiple attempts to read an iffy disc than it does your hot breath.

Re: How to copy Blu Ray extras
I just play the Blu-ray in PowerDVD and use Process Monitor to see what the mpls numbers are. I use filters to ignore everything that isn't for PowerDVD. People often say this doesn't work anymore, but I've never had a problem with it. I then look for the mpls numbers in MakeMKV. If it's not found, ...

Re: Combining two index.bdmv files into one mkv output file
Using mkvtoolnix, there should be no decompression/recompression though. In the end, I managed to follow the mkvtoolnix procedure using original index.bdmv files and ended up with one mkv file exactly as described. And since I used bdmv files, no decompression/recompression was used for sure. Just ...

Re: Handling multi-disc films
I simply extract both titles with MakeMKV and concatenate with mkvmerge. Nothing is lost. The chapters are there; the meta-data is fine. The "break" between the two halves is fine.

Re: Pioneer BDR-XS07U Flashability
Thanks, man!
Do you now if this will always be the case (i.e., it's impossible) or is it being worked on?

Re: Does makemkv call home on each invocation?
Or just an unfortunate choice of error code? Tried to start it up on my Mint desktop today and I got a popup with this message: "NO_ANSWER_FROM_MAKEMKVCON" If I start it from the cli, I also see it failing to open /usr/bin/makemkvcon: error while loading shared libraries: libcrypto.so.1.1...

Re: Persistent artifacts showing up in Blu-Ray rip
Can you be more specific about what 'artifacts on the file' means? Did MakeMKV have any errors or other messages in the log while you were doing the rip? Can you post it here? I think the problem has gone away for now. There were these green horizontal rectangles which appeared when I scrub the thr...

Re: What Backend/Frontend Encoder Do You Use?
online means the storage being "online" ergo attached/available, vs in cold storage. i.e. giving X amount of "online" storage, encoding will allow you to store more and have it be available. However, the cost of the time to do that vs the cost of just paying for more cold (i.e. ...

Re: What Backend/Frontend Encoder Do You Use?
i mostly use plex for that. Yes, that requires being online, but that's generally not been a problem, and if I'm going offline for an extended period of time, I just load up a HD. Also, not all storage has to be kept online at all times. At the end of the day, the time it sets to set up an encode /...

Re: Correctly recode PAL 25fps dvds to standard 23.976 fps
I have this automated in my own scripting tools. I use ffmpeg to re-time the audio/video (with optional pitch adjust), and mvkmerge to re-time the subtitles and chapters.
