Re: Gauging interest in Optical Drive Development
i have tried to get pioneer to start production offering to buy 5,000 drives it was met with silence
See this post by asmcom . Pioneer sold their optical drive business to Shanxi Lightchain, so you'd need to contact Shanxi Lightchain, not Pioneer. They've told asmcom that they'd be willing to ...

Re: With OEMs LG and Pioneer No Longer Manufacturing Drives
I just found this post by asmcom , which confirms that HL-DT-ST has stopped manufacturing their highest-quality SKUs, but is still manufacturing the lower-quality ones. I suspect that HL-DT-ST is simply abusing their newfound monopoly (after Pioneer's withdrawal), to manufacture cheap low-quality ...

With OEMs LG and Pioneer No Longer Manufacturing Drives
I just purchased LG BU40N for "normal" retail price of ~84€ before the last stocks dry for good.
Can you provide a source regarding "LG" withdrawing from the Blu-ray drive market?
I suspect you've confused LG (which manufactured Blu ...

The BU40N is fine and easy to flash. If it’s the cheapest option then I have no reason for you not to get it.
Oh, but it doesn’t do M-DISCS
According to this seller , the LG BU40N can indeed write M-DISC Blu-rays. And all Blu-ray drives should be able to read M-DISC Blu-rays.
I'll stick to the ...

3. Pioneer drives (all models) are superior in every way to any other manufacturer. If you have the chance at getting another Pioneer, do so.
I'll buy the I-O DATA / Pioneer drive, then.
Optical media these days has decreased in quality anyway so writing to optical disc is not a good idea.

Re: 2nd drive alongside Pioneer BDR-XD08TB - should I buy an LG BU40N, or an I-O DATA BDR-S16QZ/HA?
This is much too much to read.
Hopefully this is more concise:
Will LibreDrive firmware degrade performance when ripping CDs, or when writing discs of any kind?
Will installing official updated firmware, provided by the drive vendor, improve performance when ripping CDs, or when writing ...

Post the Makemkv info of your drives.
I don't currently own the LG BU40N or the I-O DATA BDR-S16QZ/HA, so I can't post the MakeMKV drive info for those.
I do own the Pioneer BDR-XD08TB; here's its MakeMKV drive info:

Let's put it this way. Pioneer are the superior readers and writers. If you need to write to a disc, use the Pioneer. Pretty much any other "brand name" drive will be fine for ripping CD/DVD/BD discs and the next best drive that isn't a Pioneer would be the LG BU40N. Don't even look at the Archgon ...

[SOLVED] The source file '<Unknown>' is corrupt or invalid at offset 5300545536, attempting to work around
Trying to rip a certain Blu-ray Disc (MVM Entertainment's release of A Lull in the Sea ), I get messages that "The source file '<Unknown>' is corrupt or invalid at offset 5300545536, attempting to work around". These messages always appear while MakeMKV is ripping the 4th file on the disc (episode 4 ...

Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION
I've been getting error messages when attempting to rip a specific DVD, but other DVDs have ripped fine in the same optical drive.
When I put the DVD in the drive, MakeMKV gives the error message "Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION' occurred while ...

Re: Can't rip to another drive/mount point
Is this not a problem for other Linux users?
It's a known problem for users of Flathub's package of MakeMKV. See https://github.com/flathub/com.makemkv.MakeMKV/issues/6 for more information.
Are you using the Flathub package of MakeMKV? (Note that if you installed MakeMKV via Linux Mint's ...
