I use an LG external Blu-ray drive. It says the "hardware" has LibreDrive, not not the firmware. Is that the way it is supposed to be?

When you say not the firmware, does it specifically say it isn't supported, or does it say "unpatched"? I may be wrong, but I believe that only the hardware ...
