Re: Advice on Converting Rips to Playback ATMOS on AppleTV (Infuse)
Kodi. It's a little bloaty but seems pretty reliable. I routinely stream 4k uncompressed rips through it from a NAS and it rarely flails. I'm going through a Samsung soundbar and it recognizes Atmos in a THD wrapper, no problem.

Re: Advice on Converting Rips to Playback ATMOS on AppleTV (Infuse)
I got annoyed enough with Apple's lack of TrueHD + Atmos that I bought an Nvidia Shield. Slap Kodi on that bad boy and you got yourself some Atmos playback from all your Blu-ray/UHD rips. I check back in once in a while in case Apple has started supporting other flavors of Atmos, I'd very much like ...

Re: Recommendation for best playback device for TV / Full UHD/MKV rips?
I just ditched my Apple TV 4K, which was pretty good but will likely never support Atmos passthrough on local media, for an Nvidia Shield Pro and I have to say I'm impressed. Despite my animosity toward Android, it's a solid little piece of hardware. I have all my rips on a NAS and Plex is able to p...

Re: 4K UHD - MKV - AppleTV 4K - Infuse 6 pro = my results
Very useful! I've been useing NFS and had an even slower connection, around 200 Mbps. That was fine for regular playback, even with 4k streams over a wired LAN, but any seeking never worked properly. I'm a professional IT guy but sometimes you don't see the forest for the trees and I never thought t...

Re: Play UHD+Atmos on ATV 4K?
That's what I thought. The previous message implies that Atmos 'works fine'. It does 'work fine' if we mean 'sound comes out of the sound bar', but it ain't gonna be Atmos.

Re: Play UHD+Atmos on ATV 4K?
I use Infuse to plat rips with Atmos and it works perfect. (Plex works, too, but for some reason Plex buffers for me a lot from my NAS where Infuse just plays perfectly.) How? Do you happen to have discs with Atmos in an E-AC3 track? The ones I have (so far that I've seen) are in TrueHD and don't t...

Re: Forced subtitles
A little late to the thread, but here's what I do. Only pick the 'Forced' subtitle of the language you want to read 'foreign' subtitles in. There may be multiples. After the MakeMKV rip, play the video in VLC and check the subtitle(s). If it only has one, you're golden. If it has multiple you need t...

Re: Subtitle process (MakeMKV and Handbrake for Blu-ray)
Would be interesting to know which BDs you had success with so people can verify. Maybe discs for different regions are in fact authored differently. The Bourne Ultimatum (UK release, but not Bourne Identity. It had the subs burned into the video directly.) The rest are US releases. Looper Ronin Sp...

Re: Subtitle process (MakeMKV and Handbrake for Blu-ray)
I've also found that MakeMKV is good at picking out the needed subtitles when people speak a different language. Which is the opposite of pretty much everyone else's experience here. Since almost none of the subs are actually flagged as forced, MakeMKV can not recognize them automatically (unless M...

Re: Subtitle process (MakeMKV and Handbrake for Blu-ray)
I've also found that Handbrake's auto/scan feature is quite reliable. You'll want to start by including all subtitle tracks in the language you speak, then in the GUI set the first/only track to Foreign Audio Search or whatever it is. I don't actually use Handbrake anymore since I'm anti-compression...

Re: Heads up - Support for LG UHD drives
I have a BU40N that is _not_ working with firmware 1.01, but it seems to be some other weird kind of firmware, maybe? The Drive Information box in MakeMKV reports this (on a Mac): Drive Information OS device name: /dev/rdisk2 Current profile: BD-ROM Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST Product: BD-RE BU40N Revis...

Re: Heads up - Support for LG UHD drives
What OS are you on? For me, on Linux, this is what MakeMKV looked like after ripping a disc on my laptop: https://owncloud.now.ai/index.php/s/UPb1hifvpgog22d The "DEBUG: Code 03DF/..." line is what you should see if it's successfully able to rip from your drive. My BU40N worked fine with ...

Re: Heads up - Support for LG UHD drives
Today the support for "official UHD" drives was finally enabled (not as smooth as it was hoped). As of today most "official" drives are supported, EXCEPT ones with latest firmware. If you have an "UHD official" drive, you should get one of two messages: Code 03DF - you...

Re: forced subtitles
Additionally, if you are _not_ wanting to do additional processing, there are tools out there to extract the subtitle tracks (MKVtools), view them on their own (BDSup2Sub) then remux with the bum tracks taken out (MKVToolNix). I'm a bit, mmm, maybe 'pedantic' isn't quite the right word, but somethin...
