Wipe the discs down with 99% isopropyl alcohol on ultra soft toilet paper. Do a final pass with a microfiber cloth then try again.

This isn't a firmware or drive problem. There is a thin film on the bottom of the discs left over from the manufacturing process which causes these read errors. I put some 99% isopropyl alcohol on soft toilet paper and carefully but firmly wiped across the bottom of the discs. After the alcohol evap...

I don't see different AUN start/end values when I specify different layers in the CDB at offset 6. Super hacky POC code attached -- have I done something wrong?

A careful analysis of the ioctl entry point in a drive's firmware might lead to something interesting.
