No luck with Handbrake it only seems to list the same playlists as makeMKV. What was your exact workflow? I back up the disc then opened it using handbrake, is there anything else I need to do?

I know this is a old thread but having the same issue, thanks for the tip about Handbreak, just backing up the whole disc now to try this. If I remember correctly I had this same issue with the Blur-ray.

I stand corrected, I just ripped ST 6 and in VLC it does indeed recognise that Sub track 2 is the forced track. For 5 I had to set it myself.

I have two of these and both gave me issues, but you simply have to clean the disc and if that doesn't work, clean it again. Keep repeating the clean process till you get it to rip.
