Re: Downton Abby Season 6

Thanks for this, I wish I had seen it when originally posted. If anyone is listening to this very late reply, I need to learn a) how to use this information (MakeMKV, for sure, but then HandBrake?) b) how to compile the same information for other series ( Poldark , Endeavour and All Creatures Great ...

Re: MakeMKV displays zillions of titles on Blu-ray disc

I already have this level of acquaintance with all the content I purchase. What I'm looking for is to understand which, in the case of the present two-disc season of 8 episodes I'm looking at, 200 files whose size is reported by MakeMKV as 6.5Gb or 10.1Gb each, is the "real" episode 1, epi...

MakeMKV displays zillions of titles on Blu-ray disc

(I am a long-time paid-up user of MakeMKV and I build and use it Linux.) Forgive me, I'm guessing this is very likely a naive question. I have purchased Blu-rays that I wish to put into the filesystem of my Plex Media server. I find some discs that, once loaded in MakeMKV, list almost innumerable ti...

Re: Blurays and subtitles

(Thank you for responding!) I generally keep it up-to-date, but I see just now that I've fallen far behind. I use a pile of settings I refer to as "YIFY" which I put into an .xml file and select after launch from the pane on the right side. These reduce the huge Matroska files by up to 90%...

Re: Blurays and subtitles

My mistake... I have just transcoded Tristan & Isolde including English subtitles with MakeMKV. The product is 27Gb and the subtitles are accurate . Once I reduce the .mkv file using Handbrake to a much smaller size, though I included the English subtitles (and there is no option to control thei...

Re: Blurays and subtitles

Profuse thanks for your responses. Lifecycle Commercial Bluray or DVD -> MakeMKV (running on Linux Mint desktop) -> intermediate.mkv -> Handbrake -> final.mkv -> Plex filesystem (Ubuntu 18.04 headless) -> various devices (Roku, Apple TV, Chromcast, XBox, NVIDIA Shield, PS, etc.) When I transcode a d...

Re: Blurays and subtitles

Thanks for the responses. I think I adequately explained why I'm exploring (not accusing or complaining) that this problem is not in my process nor in the disk. The point is that I've been ripping disks using MakeMKV and Handbrake for nearly a decade the same way every time. DVDs work flawlessly. Bl...

Blurays and subtitles

Summary For years now, I have robotically used MakeMKV (legally purchased version--always kept up to date), then Handbrake to transcode (rip) disks, both Bluray and DVD for use on my Plex Media Server. I've changed nothing in my habits or settings, yet, for the last 2-3 years Bluray subtitles are n...

Two specific POSIX errors repeated many times

In general, MakeMKV always works perfectly for the vast majority of titles I ask it to transcode. Posix error - No such device occurred while reading /VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB at offset 0 and, interspersed, Posix error - Input/output error occurred while reading /dev/sr1 at offset 0 This happens after ...

Does MakeMKV write a log?

If so, where does it live. I can't find anything. It would be useful to know if MakeMKV had already finished transcribing from a disc should I find my computer host crashed and wonder whether to restart the transcription or not. Could be useful for other reasons too like asking questions in this for...

Re: Subtitles are seriously ahead on Blurays

However, for a long time (several years), my procedure was: 1) Bluray disc -> MakeMVK -> .mkv 2) .mkv -> HandBrake (for compaction and optional subtitles) -> .mkv 3) .mkv -> Plex Media server and it worked perfectly. I was only 18 months or so ago that this procedure began to exhibit unsynchronized ...

Re: Subtitles are seriously ahead on Blurays

Perhaps it is a change in HandBrake, then. I believe I can use the output of MakeMKV directly, but it's literally 10 times the size of my YIFY settings in HandBrake. These settings allow me undiminished quality, for the most part, while reducing the size of the film on disk. Where I lose is in rare ...

Subtitles are seriously ahead on Blurays

I've used (paid for) MakeMKV for years now. It's always worked perfectly. My procedure is to transcode from a purchased disk to an .mkv file, then transcode using HandBrake to get the finished product, always including one or two sets of subtitles (English or English and French) as optional. I then ...
