However I can confirm that
sudo modprobe sg
fixes this issue.

Can confirm this behavior on lmde 2 Betsy (debian stretch). cat /proc/version Linux version 3.16.0-5-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 4.8.4 (Debian 4.8.4-1) ) #1 SMP Debian 3.16.51-3+deb8u1 (2018-01-08) Version 1.10.8 detects my BlueRay drive (BD-ROM HL-DT-ST) and works like charm...
