Re: MakeMKV to Handbrake for 4K (UHD)???
Hello, I am new the forum but have been a MakeMKV users for over 10 years ripping DVD's, Blu-Ray's and now attempting 4K UHD. I run a Plex Media Server so I encode all my rips using Handbrake and the default High Profile setting. When I started getting into Blu-Ray's I purchased an older Dell Preci...

Re: WANTED: Results of UHD Rips with Dolby Vision
Thanks, but my search of the forum turned up these two threads, neither of which definitively states that DV rips have HDR 10 with no DV. I made a new thread so that it would be easy for the next guy looking for this info, seeing as how it wasn't part of the FAQ.

WANTED: Results of UHD Rips with Dolby Vision
I've looked over the forum and I can't seem to find a concrete answer to the question of what happens when you rip a UHD with Dolby Vision. I've read that MKV does not support Dolby Vision. My question is, when you rip a UHD with Dolby Vision, do you still get HDR 10 data? I'm fine as long as it has...

Re: Atomic Blonde - no key ?
This movie sucked but HDR looked good. Still have not scanned with mkv yet. The way things are going it's going to take me 2 months to encode the 4k rips to 1080p HDR. For me it's all about HDR. But why not hold on to that extra detail in the 4K? HDR is good, but I prefer the combination of the hig...

Re: Interstellar 4k rip problems
Icgrzy, what are you using to play them on your non-hdr screen? I've tried mpv player, Windows built-in "Movies & TV" app, and Potplayer with madVR which all try to convert HDR content for traditional screens but none of the colors looked satisfying to me. I could notice the increase ...
Re: WONDER 4k
My LG has worked through every disc I have thrown at it, including Wonder.
With the exception of a faulty Oblivion disc, for which the replacement disc worked great.

Re: 4K UHD results and help request
For playback try the new VLC 3.0, it supports up to 8K HDR hardware playback, this should solve your playback problems. VLC 3.0 still can't playback as well as MPV. I tried it on my first gen Surface Book (with 6th gen i5) and it couldn't play a reduced bitrate 4K rip smoothly. So far only MPV and ...

Re: UHD playback on new VLC 3.0
I tried it the day they released it, still can't play as smoothly as MPV or MPC.

Re: Interstellar 4k rip problems
Mine worked on the first try. I'm not sure if it had any errors because I don't check if it successfully ripped the title. It seems to play just fine and I was able to reduce the bitrate using StaxRip. I could tell a difference in the details and color even on my 1080, non-hdr screen. It looked stun...

Re: More Playback Questions
If anyone is interested, I have some results back from testing. Using the 5th gen Surface Pro, with a 7th gen i7, playback in Movies and TV works very well and uses far less CPU than the 6th gen i5 in my Surface Book. Based on further testing with MPV, I'm guessing that it is using the hardware deco...

More Playback Questions
I stopped using VLC, but my powerful computer still can't play MKV files smoothly? On Blu-ray, each h.264 frame is encoded as 4 independent slices - this means that it is possible to decode any given frame using 4 parallel tasks. On UHD, each HEVC frame is encoded as 8 independent slices. Hardware ...

Re: Mixed Results Ripping UHD Discs Using Leaked Keys
Ah... I suspect we're getting closer to figuring this out. Although both have the WCG 2020 color space, the original MakeMKV file has a pixel matrix of yuv420p10 while the Handbrake-converted MKV has a pixel matrix of yuv420p. Here are two screenshots from mpv.io playing back a Handbrake-converted ...

Re: Mixed Results Ripping UHD Discs Using Leaked Keys
I have added some brief information about this as the last question in the FAQ thread: http://makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=16883 That is really interesting because before conversion, it will playback with good colors on my non-HDR monitor through both the native Windows 10 video app ...

UPDATE: Mixed Results Ripping UHD Discs Using Leaked Keys
A bit of an update: With the most recent set of keys, I was able to rip the US version of Ender's Game in 4K. There were two streams on the disc, once I installed Java to remedy an error from MakeMKV, I discovered that one of the streams was labeled HDR and the other No HDR. I ripped them both, but ...
