Yeah I guess its the disc. Fesh out of the box and did not work.
Tried another one. Works.

Often, fresh out of the box discs require cleaning as they can contain an invisible film on them from the manufacturing process.

Yeah, if it won't even read CD's or play DVD's at all, the red laser is probably no good. You could try cleaning the laser and see if that helps, otherwise get a new drive.
