Try set region with different disk inside. Audio CD, blank disc etc...
Or with USB to SATA-Adapter.

Re: Unable to access preferences tab Ubuntu 25.04, 1.18.1
There is something odd going on with MakeMKV 1.18.1 version.
You could try this.
Single drive mode. Open terminal and copy/paste this:
echo 'io_SingleDrive = "1"' >> ~/.MakeMKV/settings.conf

Take your favourite text editor and write that key down. Make several copy of that file.
I also backup my .MakeMKV file and transfer that to another computer.

I don't know about "headless server stuff", but does this help?

Debian 13 & MakeMKV 1.18.1
if you get endless DVD spinning with MakeMKV 1.18.1 on Debian 13.
Try install libfuse2t64 (libfuse2). That stop endless spinnig for me and MakeMKV works fine now.
Edit: Make sure you have a "dump_FW...tgz" on your .MakeMKV directory.

Re: Error installing 1.18
I just upgrade MakeMKV from 1.17.8 to 1.18.1.
Opened two makeMKV and ripped two DVD's. Everything works fine.
I use Debian 12.
Seen similar error years ago, but ignore it by -i.
(sudo) make -i install

Good info.
Yes, Debian 9 Stretch is asking to install zlib1g-dev.
This is what i use on my Debian 9 KDE to install Makemkv.
apt install build-essential pkg-config libc6-dev libssl-dev libexpat1-dev libavcodec-dev libgl1-mesa-dev zlib1g-dev qttools5-dev

Re: This application version is too old.... Paid License
I have MakeMKV 1.10.0 64-bit on my Debian Jessie and it works like charm.
Have you enter that paid lisence key to MakeMKV?
Go to your home directory.
Hit Ctrl+H for hidden files. --> .MakeMKV --> settings.conf
Find line app_Key = "paste_your_key_to_here"
