I have that original "The curse of the black pearl (2-disc collectors edition)

I can copy movie with MakeMKV 1.17.6 without problem. (movie to mkv file.)
MakeMKV scan that disc pretty long time, but still opens it.

Also mpv, plays movie fine with makemkv backend.

lsdvd + libdvdcss2 finds key in ...

Old key is just fine. Mine Key is from 2015 and works fine.

Install MakeMKV 1.18.3 from sources.

Now add your key from GUI.

You can use terminal and add your MakeMKV Key from there.
This command adds your key to the MakeMKV settings ...

You can always install official and supported MakeMKV from here:

On Debian (Linux)

I use gddrescue to make ISO image from DVD and then open that ISO with MakeMKV.
I don't have Downton Abbey Season 5 yet, but older and newer DA discs works just fine.

1. Install
apt install lsdvd gddrescue libdvd-pkg

2. Read the disc to get the key
lsdvd /dev/sr0

3. Make ISO ...

Thank you very much for this information. This helped me to solve (workaround) the problem :-)

The firmware dump was missing from my Linux system, but was present on Windows. So I copied the dump file over and now everything works perfectly...

I'm glad that helped. :)

I have two old (Non-Libre) Pioneer drives and both works fine with MakeMKV 1.18.3 on Debian 13. Compiled from sources.

Also integration with MakeMKV + mpv media player works as it should. No extra steps here.

Drives i got work with MakeMKV was using MakeMKV 1.17.6 (appimage)to get dump_firmware ...

I run MakeMKV 1.18.3 on Debian 13, but first i need download Firmware dump with 1.17.7. Without that firmware it is "Endless spin" with both my non-libre Pioneer BD-ROM drives. BD's & DVD's.

I have found a way to get the latest version (1.18.3) working.

Edit .MakeMKV/settings.conf and add your drives name to "sdf_Stop",

In my case it looks like this:
sdf_Stop = "TEAC_BD-W26SS-B_2.02_{serial number}"

With that, the original functionality returns.
