Checking 'Expert mode' in Preferences > 'General' tab exposes the 'Advanced' tab

On the 'Advanced' tab, one can manipulate the 'Default selection rule' per the following:

Changing default track selection

Make sure to download the latest/greatest VLC version. SHOULD handle most anything current.
