I have enabled Expert Mode, and opened the DVD manually. It spat out a bible of errors but popped up a dialog with a list. I chose #2 and am trying that now. Seems to be going okay so far.

Thanks, I will try that. Does the log tell you that this is the problem, or might there be another reason for the failure? Ultimately I might try buying another drive, but obviously I would prefer to avoid this expenditure. Is there a recommended drive? I currently use a Samsung.

That part of the error is transient, it happens with some disks and not other. I suspect some soft timeout or similar.
