Yes the drive is recognized by the OS I have flashed it back to the ASUS firmware (version 3.x) so it shows up correctly as "ASUS BW-16D1HT" in BIOS and Device manager. The problem is that when I insert a disc it doesn't even spin it up, and when i try to open up the disc in the file expl...

It sounds like dirty discs. UHD discs can look perfectly clean and still be dirty enough to cause the drive to have read errors.

I have a couple WH16NS40 drives. Is the "SVC 50" significant? What does it stand for & how do I check mine? (firmware? drive version?) If it doesn't say NS50 for the service code, the drive won't read BDXL data, so it can't handle UHD disks. Where do I find the "service code"...

I believe that means it was built in 2014 or earlier. NS50 drives will have a build date of 2015 or later.

New stock has a very high probability of being an NS50.

Mine just came in with a manufacturing date of 12/16. I haven't tried it yet. I am guessing it is 3.00 firmware. I will post later when I install it.
