I have two BU40Ns in Vantec enclosures, and with my Linux machines and the 1.03 firmware, I've been able to dump hundreds of discs. Maybe there's something... interesting about the USB<->SATA adapter in the unit you have?

I have dumped literally hundreds of Blu-ray Discs on Linux with MakeMKV. It works great.

If the disc doesn't appear, then it's a read problem, which means the drive can't see the disc, and has nothing to do with the OS. That means either the disc needs to be cleaned, or the drive itself is failing.

That wasn't in the KeyDB when I downloaded it earlier, but a later download did include it. 🤷‍♂️

1.03MK works consistently with my BU40N drives on Linux. You don't need 1.00 firmware.

You need to run
for a gzip'd file.

Looks based on the hash like the OP has a disc from the same master as mine. KeyDB is working for me as well.

If you look at the title in MakeMKV, what does it say about the playlist and the streams? When I just put my copy in one of my BU40Ns and looked at it, it shows 3 items, one of which is 1.2 GB and 2 chapters, the others of which are the same stream, but one has the chapter metadata, while the other ...

Those are all recent titles. They require prep work on Mike's side. I just received my copy of Darkman today.
