This sounds like what happened with my WH16NS60 before it finally stopped reading all Blu-ray Discs (still reads DVDs, but I assume its blue-violet laser must have ate it).
Blu-ray Discs can use any of 3 different video codecs: a) MPEG-2 part 2/H.262, b) MS/SMPTE VC-1, or c) MPEG-4 part 10/AVC/H.264.
