Re: Confused over frame rates being changed
Regarding Makemkv not muxing MPEG-2 streams "in a very nice / proper way", does that mean it's not a great idea to use makemkv for DVD/MPEG-2 rips? Is the mkv output by makemkv from DVDs actually problematic for media players and frame rates, sync, etc.? It's much more convenient to rip an...

Re: Confused over frame rates being changed
Thanks for digging deeper into this. The "packetizer" and code links are over my head, but it sounds like you've discovered VLC is at fault regarding the non-standard frame rates being reported under "tools>codec information" for mkv files output by mkvtoolnix, due to imprecise p...

Re: Confused over frame rates being changed
So he closed the bug request and this was his comment: "Not a bug. Matroska uses plain integers for both the default frame duration & the frame timestamps. Therefore they cannot express irrational numbers such as 30000/1001 precisely." Does this make any sense to you? I don't understan...

Re: Confused over frame rates being changed
Yeah, that might be a bit beyond what I can do. Just to be on the safe side I was dropping the files into mediainfo assuming if something was off, it would tell me. Unfortunately, it seems like DVD ripping can get messy due to a number of reasons, and without knowing why each file is being muxed the...

Re: Confused over frame rates being changed
Thanks again for that math. I opened up a bug report for that issue with mkvtoolnix and shared the information in here. I don't know in practice how files output by mkvtoolnix are affected by that issue, as that's been used for many years by tons of people worldwide. But it does seem to be doing som...

Re: Confused over frame rates being changed
That last part is very interesting. A lot of this is over my head, but I wonder if it is indeed a bug with mkvtoolnix that their NTSC output is 29.970628 rather than 29.970030, and their 23.976 output is 23.976216 vs the expected 23.976024. Is there any reason why that would be intentional? This is ...

Re: Confused over frame rates being changed
I'm using MKVToolNix GUI v98.0 "Chonks" 64-bit on Windows 10, the latest version. "(FWIW, remux of NTSC DVD it should always get the value of 30000 / 1001, because that's the only value allowed in the sequence headers, even in the case of DVD with "NTSC 24p" material and pul...

Re: Confused over frame rates being changed
I'm sure the video is being remuxed intact. What I'm concerned with is the ripping programs altering the flags and headers, affecting how the file is played back with my software or external media players. When I say forcing a framerate in mkvtoolnix, once a vob (or any file) is loaded into mkvtooln...

For the 522 errors, Cloudfare is saying this: If you're a visitor of this website: Please try again in a few minutes. If you're the owner of this website: Contact your hosting provider letting them know your web server is not completing requests. An Error 522 means that the request was able to conne...

Re: Confused over frame rates being changed
Another TV set example: QUARK (PILOT) This one gets more complicated. The VOB reports 23.976 (24000/1001) with pulldown. For some reason, makemkv changes it to variable 24.000 FPS and carries over the pulldown flag, and lists the original frame rate as 23.976 (24000/1001). Mkvtoolnix also changes it...

Re: Confused over frame rates being changed
Thanks for digging into this for me. Lots of useful information, though I admit the various frame rates being reported with DVDs and even 29.970 material from blu-rays has definitely got me confused over what's the "correct" way to do it to not confuse external media players like Ziddo/Dun...

Re: Super slooooooooooowwwww site
It's been excruciatingly slow for me, with lots of 40-second+ page loads and lots of Connection timed out / Error code 522 cloudfare pages.
Lots of SSL handshake failed Error code 525 from Cloudfare, too.
Only on this site. It's practically unusable for me.

Re: Confused over frame rates being changed
I've run into other DVDs that report this in mkvs created by makemkv: Frame rate mode : Variable Frame rate : 23.976 (23976/1000) FPS Original frame rate : 29.970 (30000/1001) FPS I haven't seen any yet that report the frame rate as 23.976 (24000/1001), even when that's listed as the "original ...

Confused over frame rates being changed
I'm about to start ripping some DVD features and extras to mkv and I want to make sure I do it correctly with the right tools. I figured the easiest, safest way would be to use makemkv. But there's some confusing framerate discrepancies I'm encountering that's leaving me unsure if I'm using the best...
