LG C9 here - love it. Not sure if there are any Dolby Vision improvements in this years CX model.
Proprietary Dolby Vision, on the other hand, can stuff it.

Re: Mullholland Drive Criterion
This doesn't help your particular problem - but a few months ago I did successfully rip the US Criterion version of M.D. So it may be your disc or drive.

Re: Bluray drive recommendations
I use an external Samsung SE-506BB/TSBD 6X USB for ripping on Debian, so it should work fine on Ubuntu. I've had it for over a year without problems.

Re: MakeMKV on Linux
1.8.11 compiled and works fine for me with openssl 1.0.1h-3 from the debian testing repo.

Re: Catching Fire
I agree. I think there are randomly generated CD's. 461 worked well for me though. I'd start there for Redbox users. I ripped this stream. Problem is, it doesn't appear that any of the streams have the dts-HD audio track. Anyone know why? Lionsgate studio is pretty well-known for not including loss...

Re: makemkvcon causes segfaults in orc
I have liborc 0.4.18-1, so that's a difference between our systems.

Re: makemkvcon causes segfaults in orc
Just as a point of reference, 1.8.9 works for me with kernel 3.13.4-1 and libc 2.18-3 on debian. So it might be something else on your system.

Re: Can MakeMKV create ISO images from DVDs?
Sounds like you might be using Linux because you are using dvdbackup?
For dvds with lots of intentional errors, I use
ddrescue -n -b 2048 /dev/sr0 backup.iso
which works most of the time. If you want to remove copy protection you will need to process the iso file a second time.
