Oh, should have said, I did try a manual mount of the device very early in the troubleshooting phase (before I posted for help). Didn't work either. I didn't know if you could manually mount a Blu-Ray or not, so failure didn't set off the warning horns, but in retrospect it may strengthen the hypoth...

Tried again tonight - read a DVD absolutely fine. Followed up with the Blu-Ray of the same movie - still no joy.

I'm flummoxed.
