managed to get it sorted.
the dump from the new drive was user only indeed, learn something new everyday.

had to pull out an old windows 7 laptop to flash using the exe.
an old forum post really helped me out there.

That is good to know, I was thinking of using the read firmware option on the SDFTool Flasher.
But that will not output a valid firmware file to already flashed drive?

I'll give the exe a go in that case.

thank you both, I've tried cleaning the disks without any luck Not sure if I want to risk it with the .exe. My current plan is to buy another drive. Copy the firmware. If that drive works well I can just return the faulty one. If they both have the same issues than maybe it is my disks that are faul...
