managed to get it sorted.
the dump from the new drive was user only indeed, learn something new everyday.

had to pull out an old windows 7 laptop to flash using the exe.
an old forum post really helped me out there.

That is good to know, I was thinking of using the read firmware option on the SDFTool Flasher.
But that will not output a valid firmware file to already flashed drive?

I'll give the exe a go in that case.

thank you both, I've tried cleaning the disks without any luck
Not sure if I want to risk it with the .exe.

My current plan is to buy another drive. Copy the firmware.
If that drive works well I can just return the faulty one.
If they both have the same issues than maybe it is my disks that are ...

I've tried many solutions on these forums to problems but I can't get the drive to read consistently.
