I think you need to install g++.

Re: makemkvcon and removing the subtitles
I did have to search around for the libx264-slow.ffpreset file. It was deprecated back in April 2011: videolan.org commit .
Sorry about that. It's hard to keep up with ffmpeg development. The constantly changing options are always changing constantly. :)

Re: Life (2009 BBC) (David Attenborough Version), Episode 9
I have no idea, but if you check the box it says something to the effect of "all content 24p except episode 9 ..."
Sure enough, the box says "1080p *Except PLANTS which is 1080i".
As I understand it, RipBot can access the official MS codec that Media Player uses. .. I just assume it all done ...

Re: Life (2009 BBC) (David Attenborough Version), Episode 9
That episode was recorded as 1080i60 while every other episode is 1080p24; this, in and of itself, isn't really a problem—however—all of the content is encoded in VC1 and an open-source codec for VC1 *interlaced* does not exist yet.
Thanks! It all makes sense now. Except why would they encode this ...

Re: makemkvcon and removing the subtitles
Going from ISO to MKV only brought the filesize down by about 400 MB. Ideally, I'd like to get each movie to 1 GB or less. MakeMKV generally builds lossless MKVs, i.e. preserving the original quality. To significantly reduce the filesize, you need to transcode at least one of the streams ...

Re: Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking
I confirmed that it works when I deselect all subtitles. I can also do a full backup with decryption. I'll be happy to help track down the problem.
BTW, title #2 is supposed to be longer than the titles, as correctly identified by MakeMKV. I had incorrectly stated that they should all be about the ...

Life (2009 BBC) (David Attenborough Version), Episode 9
Episode 9 ("Plants") is the 2nd episode on Disc Four. It appears to rip correctly, but it won't play. I've tried Totem 2.32.0, VLC 1.1.4, and MPlayer 1.0rc4-4.4.5.
I'm also unable to re-encode it with ffmpeg 0.8.3. (Actually, it's libav 0.8.3. Ubuntu packages libav instead of the ffmpeg.) It core ...

Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking
The disc contains 3 episodes. I'm able to rip the first 2 (00003.mpls and 00004.mpls), but not the 3rd (00005.mpls). The error I got:
