Does this mean that the beta version has a trial period that doesn't even require a license key?

The key also expired for me today and had me restart the application. There is no longer a key shown when I go to Help -> Register. However, I just tried another DVD and it successfully read, opened, and backed up all the files. Does the License Key actually change anything in the application? Or do...
