Anyone have any info on the drive models that are currently being used for development? Ones that are not currently crossflashable but are being tested?

Unfortunately, there is no way to know anything about that drive. I can tell you from experience that re-badged drives are everywhere and there is no way of knowing until you have the drive in your hand. The best way to get a known good drive is to buy it from a trusted seller.

Would anyone have a suggestion for a specific Pioneer drive model number? I have been mostly using the 5.25" drives but I can look at slim as well.
I know this may be of limited usefulness to everyone, but I am going to see what I can do anyway.

 No solution for the average user. Yep, totally understand. It was more a question of it it would be helpful in developing a software solution or for someone who provides the flashing service for users who don't have/want the skills to do it themselves. I totally understand that this would not be so...
