Wow, I am lost here, you, I assume buy a disc DVD, Blu-ray, and in my case 4K as well, rip to MKV film + extras then compress, why? you take the highest quality and make it worse. Have you considered keeping your original rips? No, never thought to do that. In the years to come, h.265 compressed video might not be the best way to have your files. Why would you say that? Surely, it's the "new" standard? I don't think FLAC keeps any positional audio data like Dolby A...

Continuing on with my research, I have determined that some of the codecs in use are lossy (AC3, AAC, ACM, DTS, MP2), some are lossless (DTS-HD, True HD), and one is not compressed (PCM).
