The farthest I got was with Handbrake where it successfully ripped about 50 minutes (tried all 3 titles ...

Have you tried ripping them with another backup tool yet?

if you have no other reader to check with then I would assume the lasers are getting weak

as you know, the episodes in some dvd are merged together.

so you need to use other app to separate them.

is it difficult to fix this in makemkv?

Thanks to MakeMkv I have been able to preserve over $200 invested in these 4 DVD sets that without MakeMkv would have been subject to damage or deterioration because traditional methods of making a backup failed:

Download the program of your choice something like the freeware Nero Infotool. It gives you the info on a dvd like layers, copy protection, Region Coding, etc...see what it says. You may be dealing with knockoffs.

Just as a troubleshooting aid you could try opening the disk with a different ripping tool like dvdfabdecrypter, dvdshrink or dvddecrpter to see if one of them will open the dvd and rip the disk.
